Golf Is a Hole-In-One for Total Fitness

Golf is one of the few sports that you can play your entire life. You can start your golf journey as a child or take it up later in life.

The game of golf will strengthen all four domains of Marine Corps Total Fitness: social, spiritual, mental, and physical.

Social Fitness: Golf is a slow-paced game, which requires a lot of time and patience to master. It also allows you to learn from others by watching their approach, gathering tips, and enjoying the journey.

Golf gives you time to develop strong, long-lasting relationships with friends, family members, and colleagues. Some major business and financial decisions have been made over 18 holes.

Spiritual Fitness: Things don’t always go your way, especially when starting out. You need to remain a good sport and follow your own code of good behavior. Playing golf also allows you to connect to nature.

Mental Fitness: Golf is a mentally taxing game as you must play your foul balls, unlike baseball. The wind might be blowing in the wrong direction, there might be rain, your swing might be off, or you might have some distracting fan making too much noise as you tee off.

You need to have the mental resiliency to get through all these things and be precise with your approach and know what club to use in a certain situation.

Physical Fitness: Golf is a power-based sport where swinging the golf club is a total body movement that can take years to master. Just like in the weight room, when you are trying to perfect the “hang clean,” it takes time, a lot of patience, and strength.
