Joint Travel Regulations (JTR) allow service members to ship their empty gun safes in addition to their prescribed household goods weight allowance to their next permanent duty station. Gun safes must be empty and not exceed 500 pounds.  

The policy change was announced in 2022 as part of the Department of Defense’s support and promotion of safe storage of firearms.
