Hard Work Pays Off for College-bound Marine
The Leadership Scholar Program (LSP) assists qualified Marines prepare academically and apply to highly selective colleges and universities throughout the country. LSP helps Marines find the most expeditious route to achieving their educational objectives.
Sgt Eugene Oh possessed a highly specialized skill set, graduating at the top of his class in both basic and advanced training and successfully completing three military schools with honors. Throughout his tenure, he remained committed to enhancing his skills and aiding his fellow Marines in improving their jobs.
The LSP team at the Camp Pendleton Voluntary Education Center (VEC) began collaborating with Sgt Oh in April 2020, and he has since been diligently preparing himself to transition to a four-year college. He informed the VEC team of his progress every semester, receiving support from Service to School, Warriors Scholar Project, and the target schools' advisors, whom he followed closely for advice.
He enrolled in a community college to complete the prerequisites for science programs, and while serving with the 1st Maintenance Battalion, he was able to maintain an impressive 3.8 GPA. Sgt Oh applied to seven universities and was accepted by all of them: Stanford, Princeton, Yale, and four University of California campuses (Berkeley, Irvine, Los Angeles, and San Diego).
Sgt Oh expressed gratitude about his experience with the LSP and the Camp Pendleton VEC team: “Thank you so much for your support and hard work! Without your aid and advice, I definitely wouldn't have come so far. Please extend my thanks to the rest of the team!”
